To: KLP who wrote (1339 ) 8/26/2001 1:57:58 AM From: CVJ Respond to of 1669 The redistricting is done by the state legislature, which in CA means the Dems party machinery. Gov. Gray Davis and Condit have been tight for many years and everyone is in a quandary about how to proceed. There is no local Dem with enough name recognition, that wants to run, to take Condit's place, so that is holding up the redistricting. If it looks like Condit is going to come out of this mess still viable enough to win, this district will be left mostly alone with the adjoining districts. If it looks like Condit is dead meat, like it does right now, then the district will have to be reshaped for a relative unknown Demo to have a chance against a couple of well-known Rep's contenders. For the Rep',s the bst outcome would be redistricting by splitting the current district and have the Rep's win both. (I can dream, can't I?) The problem is that there is a 5 or 6 district domino affect on redistricting, depending on which way Condit goes. Add to that a time deadline and the Demo's are wishing for one of two things: Condit would disappear like Chandra did; or, that Chandra shows up and says it was all a big joke. Neither of which is going to happen. The best places to get the local take on all this are the two daily's here which have each had separate interviews with Condit since Thursday night. Friday and Saturday editions of both are on the web.modbee.com (Modesto Bee)mercedsun-star.com Lots of articles, opinions, and information about registration etc. ie, Merced County has increased registration of Republican voters from 35% to 40%, 80% of those are new voters and 20% are Demo switches to Repubs. Demos are now 48%. IOW, Dem/Rep registration went from 49/35 in Feb to 48/40 now. 750 to 800 new GOP registrations per week now and particularly noteworthy to the party is that 20% of the new GOPer's have Hispanic surnames. This could be an indication that the Dem's monopolization of the Hispanic vote cannot be taken for granted anymore by the Dems. Chas·PoleiticlePundid
