Yes, bohemianism has had its good side, although I think that the notion that one has to live by an ethic of self- expression to produce great art is mistaken. For one thing, a lot of great art, for a very long time, was not primarily self- expressive, but was created under contract for a patron, with a defined subject. For another, a lot of quite responsible people were great artists, like Rembrandt, Bach, Chaucer, Henry James, and TS Eliot. In any event, being a hipster does not make one a great artist, and when bohemianism becomes a mass phenomenon, it has many unintended, and deleterious side effects........
