Especailly note the part about people looking at things differently. I believe we were JUST discussing that in the context of civility. :-) Talk about coincidences.

Once you get in the habit of not smiling at people, I bet that reinforces itself. Because unless you run in to a compulsively smilely person smiling on purpose (such as myself) no one is going to smile at you. I've thought about it a lot walking around. When you smile at someone you don't know- try to evaluate it while it's happening- it's almost simultaneous. So if your face doesn't make that first twitch in the right direction the other person probably isn't going to smile at you.
