I bought Varian before their break up,

made a quick 15-29 % in 3 months.

Could have held and made much more.

Sometimes lots of value in these conglomerates. New management usually incentivized to do something.

Also, pure plays get analysts and long term buyers to hold the stock - results in higher prices.

ALso, from a tax stand point - you buy one security, sell any losers short term, in the quarter & year you want, hold the winners long term...

There is also the possiblity of acaquisitons of some the pieces.
