Good Morning, Freddy!

"Every man takes the limit of his own field of vision for the limits of the world." -- Arthur Schopenhauer (Just read this in a post of X's elsewhere and thought it made a nice opening.)

I wanted to report on the the global aspect of Ammo's experience so far at school. I was talking to my dear friend whose son just started at OU and I couldn't help but compare their roommate experiences thus far. B's roommate is from Dallas, and his suitemates are from the same small town in Oklahoma and probably requested each other-- a lot of kids going to Tx and OK schools do this. Imo, this is an awful idea- very limiting, very provincial- what's the point of going away? BUt anyway- Ammo couldn't have done this as no one else from his class is going to USC--

FIrst- you know I was worried about Ammo's being in an apt. How would he survive? He doesn't know how to turn on a kitchen faucet to get water. His idea of meal preparation is opening a can of spaghettios and eating it cold. But I should not have doubted, for Ammo has landed on his feet in style yet again:

One of his apartment mates is a gourmet cook-- actually has his own set of knives (no, Freddy, NOT switchblades) and has been to cooking camps. According to his mother, when other kids were watching Sesame Street and learning their ABC's, John was watching Julia Child and learning how to filet a fish. The first day, he bought a full set of dishes, pots and pans and silverware. I was embarrassed; Ammo had one frying pan, a plastic bowl and a spoon. We felt so guilty we went out and bought a microwave for the apt. I also bought a toilet brush. Dan and I have a bet whether it will still have the wrapping on it in May.

Another aptmate is from the People's Republic of CHina who has been in the US only two years completing high school- he speaks perfect English though-- and loves to cook Chinese.

Ammo's roomie, who has an Hispanic name, but seems extremely American, is a cinema major interested in directing (I could see Ammo's brain working- he was seeing those marquee lights -directed by Eduardo.... STARRING..Ammo!!)who also loves basketball and the first night he and Ammo went out and started a pick-up game, then came in and watched DieHard. A perfect male-bonding night. Last night they were watching Blazing Saddles. I suggested they open a can of beans and have an interactive viewing experience; he wrote- 'Mom, that's really gross". He used to think I was funny. Sigh. ANyway-It's a roomie marriage made in heaven so far. Eddie also brought a TV and stereo, and A CAR.

There is a theatre that shows cult and classic movies at midnight somewhere around-- I resisted the urge to get all neurotic about this so I didn't ask where it was located. The whole floor was going together one night though. 30 of them should be safe. Unless the Bloods or someone thinks they are a rival gang. I hope they don't all wear their USC colors.

An ICQ message this morning says- "We just got back from the store- JOhn is making some chicken- bean thing tonight and YangWei is making pig's feet tomorrow."

Pig's feet? This from the boy who believes eating anything other than pizza, cocoapuffs, and McD's will cause premature aging and a desire to listen to Lawrence Welk?

College is a wonderful thing.
