Donny: At what age should children become self-sufficient? Thirteen? Fifteen? Seventeen? When they enter college? When they exit college? You tell me.

I'm not a believer in having kids work 20 hours a week and go to high school at the same time. Grades inevitably suffer. It's more important that they attain good grades. Always time for a job in the summer. My wife and I always told our kids, "Make good grades, stay active in extra-curricular activities at high school, and we'll pay for your car insurance." They upheld their end of the bargain, we upheld ours.

Irresponsible parenting? I don't think so.
