Re; Bad yields?

Clearly, the author is unaware of the relationship between voltage and power.

The spitfire topped out at about 1.1GHZ in air (at 1.75v) while even the first stepping of morgan is good for 1.33GHZ at 1.75v in air - morgan is scaling significantly better than spitfire. Desktop Morgan on .18 Aluminum is competitive with Tualatin on .13 copper.

Overclockers have been getting about 10% lower clock speed out of Palomino than Thunderbird (in the first stepping) BUT thunderbird uses 20% more power at a given clock and voltage than palomino, while spitfire uses only about 8% more power than morgan (at the same voltage and clock speed).

So it appears that power saving modifications to either the core or the process are implemented in the mobile and SMP versions of Palomino that aren't present in the desktop version of morgan. The SMP chips need to run in 1U racks and power savings here is important - and may let AMD make additional progress against Foster, since Athlon MP at a given performance level uses significantly less power than Foster.

Desktop Palominos are expected to be released soon, and a number of vendors are showing availability of 1.4GHZ Athlon MP within 2 weeks. Will the Desktop version of Palomino, like the Desktop version of Morgan use more power but clock higher? We'll soon see.
