Stan: Thanks, excellent site. No, I'm not a great number cruncher, although I will fiddle a little. I did compare up vs. down months for August, September and October (I didn't want to tackle all 12) just to see how these numbers stack up. Wish I had the time to compare the actual return by month. But here's what I found going back to 1950.

The S&P 500 rose and fell in the three months as follows:

AUGUST
Up - 26 years
Down - 25 years

SEPTEMBER
Up - 24 years
Unchanged - 1 year
Down - 26 years

OCTOBER
Up - 28 years
Down - 23 years

I think this does sort of show that while September and October are considered the worst months of the year on average, August sure isn't far behind. And I did see at least a couple of whopping plunges occurring in August.

I think the above hints at October being over-rated as a down month simply because it has caught a lot of the (deserved) headlines over the years. And September may be the worst month of all, but there is a silver lining.

But, again, proceed with caution. I saw some really good gains occurring in all three months.
