>> From "irrational exuberance" in December 1996 to his remarks at Jackson Hole in August 1999, Greenspan has made it clear that he thinks the stock market is part of his job.

Imo his only interest in the market was based on the potential inflationary impact of the "wealth effect". The fact that he limited himself to occasional jawboning and took no action that might influence the market for nearly 3 years after the "irrational exuberance" comment would seem to substantiate that it wasn't his primary area of focus. He's also been lavish in his praise of the role of technology in driving increases in productivity.

I believe that Greenspan and his board misjudged the impact of the multiple rate increases in 1999/2000, and were late in trying to correct their error, but the target was an overheated economy, not the nasdaq.

>> Do you really disagree?

Since you've been monitoring this board for a long time, I'm disappointed you felt that question was necessary. As usual, I've expressed my personal opinion but make no claim to any special insight.
