EK, this is what happened to the DOW:

1934-1950 = 1966-1982 = 16 years : trading range markets, buy low & sell high
1950-1966 = 1982-1998 = 16 years : uptrend markets, buy & hold

1998-2014: ???

During the treacherous period of 1965-1982, Warren Buffet averaged 24.36% annual gain.
