To: Peter O'Brien who wrote (174539 ) 8/26/2001 7:53:09 PM From: American Spirit Respond to of 769670 The GOP and Kenneth Starr spent 100 million of our money and 2-3 years investigating the CLintons past (called Whitewater). Why? Just because they wanted to. Not because any of the charges hurt any American one iota. What did they come up with after the most extensive witch hunt in US history? Nada. Nothing of substance. Just a stained blouse and a lie about infidelity. Congratulations. That was really good for the nation. But maybe the discovery of Monica did cost Gore the election. Of course it did. And that was the real and only purpose all along wasn't it? So now we have someone REALLY corrupt in power. Ugh. Whitewater was a phony bunch of charges no matter how hard the right-wing tried to find wrong-doing, including putting innocent people in prison for not going along with their witch hunt and paying bimbos of the past to go public. When GW and Cheney are investigated for energy abuses by the Congress and Senate, I'm sure they will receive much more respectful treatment. I doubt very much if the investigation will include their personal lives, whether it's GW's alcoholism, whether or not he's ever been unfaithful to Laura like his father was rumored to be to Barbara, or if Cheney's daughter is a lesbian, openly or not. This kind of trash has no place in the spotlight of political debate. And as former GOP Speaker Livingston has learned, it can come back to haunt you. Why do right-wingers dislike Hilary Clinton? Because she's extremely smart, extremely powerful and is a role model to women they disapprove of because their policies inhibit womens rights, from the cutting of social programs needed most by women, to male right-wing dominated anti-feminist and abortion rights movements, to issues women care about like pollution-environment, health care, day-care and patients bill of rights. I'm not a big Hilary fan, but she is quite a woman and if not for her Bill nevre would have made it from fatherless poverty to becoming the most successful president of our lifetimes. Boy do right-wingers hate to hear that and compare 7.5 years of prosperity to what we have now. Or before Clinton for that matter. Are the Bushes just unlucky they get severe recessions when they serve. Maybe not. So far everything Bush has done has only made whatever recession we had from the dot-com collapse even worse. And expect social conditions in the US to erode now too, and possibly become troubling. Remember the race riots of the Bush Sr. era? You know the conditions under which those tragedies happen and we are setting ourselves up for them again in 1-2 years.
