Economy Likely Up Over Next Year -Evans

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. economy will likely strengthen and return to full growth potential in the next year, Commerce Secretary Don Evans said on Wednesday.

``I'm optimistic, there are some good signs out there,'' Evans told a news conference to discuss the latest figures on second quarter growth.

Evans noted the GDP report released by his department on Wednesday showed inventory levels were being reduced -- a welcome sign -- and said housing sales and construction and retail sales were continuing to provide support for the struggling economy.

The report showed the economy grew at a mere 0.2 percent in the second quarter, far off the economy's potential to grow without igniting inflation. Evans echoed estimates from analysts who think the U.S. economy can grow between 3.0 percent to 3.5 percent without creating price pressures.

``Over maybe the next year, I certainly expect it (U.S. economic growth) to return to those kind of levels of (potential) growth,'' he said.
