Mugabe may move elections up to January of 2002. The economic effects of his land grab won't be felt until the middle of next year. It's hard to believe things will get worse.

Harare, Zimbabwe (CNSNews.com) - The Zimbabwe government reportedly may move up the date for the country's presidential election, as the country braces itself for continued violence and financial difficulty. Elections were scheduled to be held next April, but local media here suggest that the government of Robert Mugabe, concerned about increasing international criticism of its administration, may hold the election as early as January 2002. Government insiders expect the full extent of the country's economic collapse - a result of the controversial land-grab program - will only be felt towards the middle of next year. Coupled to this consideration is Mugabe's terror campaign, which has seen his party win several by-elections while using violence and intimidation.

War, revolution, dictatorship, famine, corruption, you name it. There seems to be no way out. The article you posted is yet another example of the mess. And there seems to be no end. The UN intervenes in some disaster, gets things halfway straightened out, leaves, and everything immediately deteriorates again. And again. And ...
