Great list. I would tweak it by removing Karl Popper and Charles Beard. Beard is a respected historian of a distinctly conservative stripe. And Popper has contributed much to libertarian thought.

I would add Antonio Gramsci, who wrote, I think it was in Letters From Prison, that the way for communism to take root in the world is to patiently undermine Western institutions, starting with seminaries and churches and moving on to academe. The strategy has been a resounding success. We are surrounded by Gramscian marxists. It's been a lot more effective than Lenin's "take it to the streets" strategy.

I smile when I see Coming of Age in Samoa at the top of the list. Those people had a fun time conning Mead. Or maybe Mead was so intent on leaving with a desired result she was blind to their real mores; that they believed in monogamy and frowned on premarital sex and adultery. But I guess it was fun for her readers to envision a utopia of free and open sex under the palm trees...

The Pentagon Papers shouldn't be on the list, either. What is wrong with the truth?

Their 50 best list is not your usual "best of" fare. Chesterton? Walker Percy? Flannery O'Connor? Yes!!! These people are right on!
