CBO: Government raids Soc. Security
By William L. Watts, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 12:35 PM ET Aug. 27, 2001

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Congressional budget analysts expect the government to spend
$9 billion worth of Social Security receipts on other government operations as a result of a
slowing economy and tax rebates, news reports said.

The update by the nonpartisan
Congressional Budget Office follows a
marginally more optimistic projection
from the White House last week, which
saw the government maintaining a
non-Social Security surplus of $1 billion
in fiscal 2001 and fiscal 2002.

The Associated Press obtained an early
copy of the report, which is certain to
inspire more bickering between
Republicans and Democrats over the
fate of the so-called Social Security
trust fund, which both parties and the
White House have vowed not to touch.

There goes BUSHKIE....he's doing what he said he wouldn't do....LIKE FATHER LIKE SON
