Rusty> This is good news ... MSFT won't be losing money on every box during the Christmas buying season.

That depends more on how many boxes of "XP" are still sitting on the shelves, come Jan.

Microsoft pulls Netscape tools support

REDMOND, Wash. (CBS.MW) -- Microsoft Corp. says "security and technical reasons" were behind the company's decision to make the latest versions of Internet Explorer without support for some third-party software, including Apple Computer's QuickTime multimedia player.

Critics call this the latest example of the software giant promoting its own technology to the exclusion of others, the Mercury News reported. "This is typical Microsoft (MSFT: news, chart, profile) behavior, supporting its own proprietary technology that locks you into Windows," said Marty Gordon, a spokesman for Netscape, now owned by AOL Time Warner (AOL: news, chart, profile). Apple (AAPL: news, chart, profile) reportedly alerted program developers this week to the development and has made available software, which can restore compatibility.
