Gosh.
I would interpret that as just STRANGE.
And I would assume that however ineptly she was complimenting you.
And she probably shouldn't be dealing with the public.
These are the conclusions I come to.

In this particular case, I would accept the literary interpretation ...

... at face value as the one intended.

Further proof of unblemished verity lies in the fact that this person could have indeed profited personally had the intent of the remark not been 'pure.'

i.e., had the shampooer the hidden agenda of selling you an expensive color treatment for additional personal profit -- directly or indirectly through increased revenues of the employer -- this comment would not have been used as the introductory statement to launch an ensuing sales pitch.
