or are those scrappy Demos right that we cause them?
Sure. GWB held a gun to AGs head and made him first pimp the money supply and NASDAQ, using Y2K as an excuse, then slam on the brakes and hold 'em down too long to push the economy into a good recession. Obviously it's GWBs fault.

As to his father: During the '92 election campaign (as a result of which we were blessed with Slick), Bush Senior said the economy had already turned around. And know what? He was right. Unfortunately, Slick got the benefit.

Reagan and Nixon were lucky to have their recessions early enough tin their terms that it was clear recovery was on the way by the next election. Reagan was popular and got re-elected. ANd Nixon got Watergated.

Cause 'em? Remember the '20s? Eight years of uninterrupted prosperity. Right up to the Great Crash.

Of course Hoover caused that. Yeah. Right.

John,

No, we didn't cause them. Those crappy dems are really good at building those houses of cards designed to fall whenever a Republican takes the White House. Most of the "surplus" Clinton crowed about, was a downright smoke screen. The money, simply, was not there, and the market could only maintain that insane boom for a limited period of time.
