HP would announce that they're putting peanut butter on their servers if they thought it would help them sell some.

Why should Sun put any effort into Linux? They can take the best of whatever anybody else does, at any time, and put it on their own hardware. The GPL nature of Linux makes it impossible to protect the intellectual property. So should HP-Linux (or should we call it HP-lUniX since they will most likely mess it up just like HP-UX) any one else can immediately use it if they wish.

When Linux is as stable and scalable as Solaris, then it will be a threat. IMO that will only happen if Sun decide to take it on, which they may if ever it gets close to being a real enterprise operating system. Sun doesn't charge for Solaris after-all: the software is free, they make money on the hardware and their value is in the system.

Oh, and don't forget, they have a Linux shim which lets any Linux software run on Solaris without modification, just a GCC recompile for SPARC.

it is my understanding that sunw was the prime reason for the demise of sgi. i have to think they know what their doing.

imo, a complete integrated system is the way to go. this is more than just about servers. it is about servers communicating with other java enabled software such as apps and apps servers.

imo, they will be a major player in the internet buildout over the next decade.

rocky.
