Re: Thus, a 2.0GHz Northwood would probably perform like a 2.2GHz Willamette

The rule of thumb is that if you don't quadruple cache, don't bother. Taking P4 from 256K to 1 megabyte of cache would be expected to increase performance by 5%. Taking it to 512K would make a 2GHZ perform like a 2.05GHZ

OTOH, P4 crashes so hard when it encounters a stall, that it might be more sensitive to increases in cache size than most processors, so there may well be more of an improvement.

I guess we'll soon see.

It's a cinch that it won't show anything like the performance improvement of Palomino vs. Thunderbird unless a lot more was done than a half step increase in cache.

WB - RE: "Thus, a 1.8GHz Pentium 4 equaling a 1.4GHz Athlon should follow the same rules as a 3.0GHz Northwood equaling a 2.4GHz Barton by the end of next year."

This may be one reason why AMD hasn't mentioned if they will do some kind of "PR" rating with future processors because any comparisons they make now will be to Willamette, not the expectedly higher performing per Ghz Northwood. If Northwood comes out after Palomino (assuming it ever comes out) what good would it do for AMD to compare itself to Willy... Uh-oh, here come the replies saying AMD is waiting for Northwood to come out before they release Palomino! jajaja

PS: This is my first reply to you. You remind me of PB for some reason. Like you, he was pretty nice when he first started posting. But I bet it'll slowly wear off as time passes and Ali replies to you enough. ;)
