rb you say...<<<<<There are two ways a P/E multiple can go lower. Either prices fall or earnings rise. That is effectively the dilemma the market is currently in. If earnings do not rise, if growth does not re-accelerate, prices will continue to fall until the market's P/E multiple reverts to its historical level.

what is a fair p/e, then for the nasdaq ? my understanding was that the p/e at the peak (say nasdaq 5000 for simple arithmetic) was about 200...(or was that 250 ?)

a p/e of 200 meant that the earnings for the nasdaq at the peak of the bubble were 25...so, again, what is a fair p/e ? a p/e of 20 x earnings = 500 on the nasdaq...

then there is the argument about obsolescence...you don't know if the stars of the nasdaq now will be the big hitters when this thing recovers...

and when you say : <<<<<<<the general trend over time is for companies to increase their earnings

i don't know...isin't the general trend over time for companies to screw up, fall asleep and lose market share ?

you buying any xerox or polaroid lately ?

You wrote,

......they bought low when very few wanted to buy and held on. Such an opportunity is coming in early October.

FWIW, a psychic friend of mine says that the real/true opportunity to buy low comes after a minor crash that's most likely to occur about Dec 22nd - first two weeks of January 2002. Also a
a recovery in the tech stocks seem to have begun. But don't be fooled as this won't last. On balance the Nasdaq will rise from here, correct at end of October and peak out in November. Watch out after November! It appears that November is the last chance to cash out profitable positions. And short the market!

Ah yes! I am aware that a stargazer believes that November is the "bottom" month.

We have a conflicting viewpoints here. Let's see which one plays out true. I myself favor the first one.

Women barred from tunnel inspection

Tuesday, August 28, 2001 at 18:00 JST
MAEBASHI — Around 30 local women on a tour of a tunnel construction site in Gunma Prefecture were barred from entering the site by a foreman who said women would incur the wrath of a mountain deity and thus cause accidents, prefectural government officials said Tuesday.

A consortium of three construction companies building the tunnel organized a tour for local residents to show them ongoing construction of a 945-meter tunnel linking Haruna township in Gunma Prefecture with a Nagano Shinkansen bullet-train station.

Around 100 locals including the women joined the tour and were briefed on the history and method of construction used.

But when they were about to inspect the tunnel, the head of the construction site told the group, "The deities of mountains are female and if women enter (the site), the mountain deity will be jealous.
