The data show another thing: the whole prior discussion about the size of the cache seems almost laughable taking into consideration the attainable speed increases: compared to a 256 KB cache a 512 KB cache causes a best case performance increase of five percent (FPM memory with PB cache under Windows NT).

And, if you'd care to slog through them, the following page has links to a series of papers on different aspects of cache design. If you review them, you'll see that after 32K benefits decrease rapidly, and after 128K, they really get hard to come by (not the same as a 4x rule, I know, but at these cache sizes it is reasonable, perhaps even optimistic).
