tc, thank you & also Gottfried. I still have the problem which is an error message every time I open up. I close the error message & hit ctrl-alt-delete. This brings up Explorer, Ram booster, Conmgr, Orschd, Systray, & Navapw32. I know what systray is & am guessing (possibly incorrectly) that Explorer means Internet Explorer - the rest i don't know. When I try to close it (Explorer) I get a shutdown & a message that the program is not responding. I hit ok & everything comes back up. Then I shut down & restart & the error message is gone. This a.m .it took 20 minutes of fiddling to get rid of the error message ie. it's stickier than ever.

Of course, it could have nothing to do with Internet Explorer!

Also, since this all started the OS seems to have been going downhill. Very slow in spite of emptying the temp files; the mouse has started to stick (even after thorough cleaning). Memory seems pitiful. In Adobe the images take longer to come up. Patches of Word float on other windows & on the desktop. When I open IE, a section of the window underneath remains for several seconds etc. Un-nerving :)

My virus definitions are updated frequently. Running Win 98 on a P3-500/256. EOD I will shut down & verify the text of the error message. IE 5.5 is still in the recycle. Thanks again!
