Andreas - RE: "Even there it has been a flop (except for the a few months in '00 when the fastest Athlon was selling for >$500 and you could really save money by buying a Duron). Did you ever see an enthusiat site like Overclockers.com recommending a Duron? Or much discussion about in the BBSs at AMDZone, AnandTech etc.? When you can get the fastest processor from AMD for $100 you won't save 50 bucks to get a Duron which is some hundred MHz behind. Especially not if you are an enthusiast..."

Good point. Duron 950 is 2 bucks less than faster 900 Thunderbird. Not much point in buying the Duron. Makes me wonder how AMD sold 7.7M processors last Q.

"I think AMD should kill the Duron line ASAP and focus on Athlon instead. Other than the brand advantage it would also allow AMD to better allocate production since they didn't have to run two different processor lines. A processor differentiation makes only sense if you have an exponential pricing scheme (like Intel's with the P4) or are capacity constrained. If the pricing is linear anyway why bother producing a low end processor nobody wants?"

This would be a gutsy move for AMD to do, which eliminates all chances of it happening. I agree with you, get rid of DUDon and move forward with a new strategy. The Athlon is selling at prices the K6-2 went for back in the day, and Duron is selling for LESS than that...

Andreas,

"I think AMD should kill the Duron line ASAP and focus on Athlon instead."

That's what I have been saying for a long time already!
