It is a great story. It's a horror story. It's a story about internal strength. It's a story about foolish ideas (in this case of the medical establishment). It's a story of domestic abuse. And to have crammed it into so small a space absolutely amazes me. It's a very compact story. Muscular. No fat.

I saw a wonderful program about Roberta Guaspari some months ago. I wonder if what you saw was a new one. And I have to write about this: Last night I watched part of the Faces program with John Cleese. It had a moment in it i'll never forget. There is a rare medical syndrome that causes, among other symptoms, complete facial paralysis in its sufferers. They can't smile. (I thought about the discussion we'd had on Kissy about the effects of smiling, of course.) The little girl with the utterly immobile face who was featured was soon to start first grade. Where she would be unable to smile. To have any facial expression. Imagine. She was taken to a doctor who had devised a treatment for these patients in which strips of muscle was taken from her thigh and transplanted to her cheeks, attaching to the corners of her mouth. Then we see the frozen-faced little girl on the first day of school. She gives a big, beautiful, smile. It was stunning. Emotionally stunning. As beautiful as anything i've ever seen, I do believe.
