Aug. consumer confidence falls to 114.3 by Rex Nutting

The softening job market is making American consumers increasingly nervous, the Conference Board said Tuesday. The board's consumer confidence index dropped unexpectedly to 114.3 in August from a revised 116.3 in July. It was the lowest reading since April. Economists were looking for the index to rise slightly to 117.0. "The deteriorating U.S. job market dampened consumer spirits this month," said economist Lynn Franco, director of the board's consumer survey. The present situation index fell to 145.8 in August from 151.3 in July. The expectations index (which gauges feelings about the economy in six months) rose to 93.3 in August from 92.9 in July.
