A different combination of technology and frequency-band is considered a different mode, e.g.,

CDMA 800 MHz/CDMA 1900 MHz/AMPS 800 MHz (tri-mode)
or
CDMA 800 MHz/GSM 800 MHz (dual-mode)

Verizon carries several tri-mode models. A friend just bought an Audiovox tri-mode in the Seattle area.

There are exceptions to this requirement. This fact was volunteered by Steve Altman at the analyst conference in February. He did not mention names, but I assume Nokia has an exception.

I wonder what they paid for the privilege?
