Well, her control is her madness.
There isn't much you can DO to a mad person once you've locked them up.
You can't make them sane.
I think that is her power.
When she said she had to creep over him, I took that as a symbol for her domination of him by her madness. Her will was stronger than his, imo. She got an escape, and he did not get what he wanted- a docile and tractable wife. So she won. In a rather horrible way.

So that the madness- is not really-- madness? But more like the trapped animal chewing off his own leg to be free?
An action that from the outside appears terrible and strange, but is actually a logical means of survival?
