I used to run a small IM department, part-time, in addition to my engineering duties. Got to be quite expert on "stable configurations". There were some combinations (like Dos 3.1, 4.0, 5, and combinations of Win3.1 and 95 that could run reliably. But it felt more like alchemy than Computer Science. NT was worlds better (I still use it at SP6). I'm not a joiner and really want my OS to be stable. I was initially a UNIX guy but reluctantly went to the Dark Side a few years ago. Well, a lot of years ago, really. Too bad.

Windows tries to do what UNIX did 20 years ago. And they do it poorly. X Windows was a pretty poor GUI for the USER, but techheads liked it. I miss the command line and shell scripts.
