If government money is going to be spent on research, its best spent on BASIC research, the kind where there's no reason to expect practical result for years if ever.

There's plenty of private money for research likely to yield short term results. At least until the democrats succeed in nationalizing the pharmaceutical industry.

I don't presume to know the best way to choose. They are all reasonable arguments. Perhaps that's why we spread the money around as blow the political winds

Actually, I agree with Jorj on the proper role of government in this matter. It appears, though that we are very much a minority and our views will not prevail.
