Comverse Technology, a supplier of software and systems used in telecommunications applications, reported a second-quarter profit, excluding one-time costs, of $50 million, or 28 cents a share, down 20 percent from $62.5 million, or 36 cents, in the year-ago quarter.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial/First Call expected profits of 28 cents a share in the just-concluded quarter.

Revenue came in at $345.1 million, up 18 percent from last year's $292.1 million. Analysts had expected Comverse to take in almost $347 million in the second quarter.
