ok ..
let see, one at a time ...

>>>> Will you please explain what happens with a reformat.
removes all the "tags and tabs" that separate and partition folders, files, etc

Does it clean the HD
no ... it does NOT clean the drive but similar to what you'd have in this sentence if you were to remove all the spaces between words .... makes it gobbledook to "normal" use .... new stuff will be "written over" with new tags and tabs so the software can locate it

If so, why don't people do this rather than get a new HD
size, speed and dependability are some of the reasons I have when I do buy new ...
a couple year old HD could be running at half or even less the speed of a new one ...
and the things do just plain wear out ..... bearings especially ...

they are really cheap now ....

let me pull out a "long time ago story" .... gggg

the FIRST one I purchased was an external HD for my NEW superfastcouldn'tbebeaten TRS80 mod III
cost me a thousand bucks ...
the box cost me nearly 2800 bucks
and the drive was the biggest one readily available ...

I seem to recall the box had twin internal drives using 5 1/2 in floppies with 48 meg of ram .... and I think the HD was one thousand meg ...
cause it was a great deal to get one for a buck a meg .....ggggg
