What version of Windows are you running? Also cpu speed and memory. Go to accessories, system tools, system information, tools, system configuration utility, startup and double check that the only programs running in the background are the 3 you previously listed.

A really bad battery?

I doubt it, but the time loss sometimes does indicate a battery problem. Don't think it would cause the pause though?

cause the pause?...how poetic ;)

After you complete post 22135, go to settings, control panel, system, device manager and see if any of the items listed have a yellow mark.

BTW: I had a similar but less serious situation that you described. It ended up being an overtaxed system, compounded by a video card driver not loading properly. However, it took going through a lot of basic steps to isolate the problem(s).
