In addition to wall power there is a little, usually quarter sized, battery on the motherboard...they usually have a life span of 3-5 years. When they start to go...time loss and erratic behavior are not uncommon.

PS...I'm just throwing it out as a possibility. My own experience with bad batteries is time loss...I've really not personally noticed the pausing or freezes that you're experiencing.
