SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- One in 10 college students believe they are addicted to the Internet, according to research presented this week at the American Psychological Association's meeting in San Francisco.

A clinical psychology doctoral candidate at New York's St. John's University, Richard DioGuardi reported on his survey of 134 college freshmen and sophomores, Reuters reported. He said 15 percent showed signs of addiction, while 11 percent identified themselves as hooked. The Internet was hindering their daily lives, they craved the Internet, they experienced Internet "withdrawal" and/or they cut back on important social activities to go online, he said. At the same time, "it was surprising that those who classified themselves as addicted weren't spending 40 hours a week online," DioGuardi said. "The average was only six to 10 hours."
