Economic Slowdown Hits Acer As Quarterly Net Plunges 94%
By TERHO UIMONEN
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

August 29, 2001
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's best-known computer maker, Acer Inc., posted a 94% drop in second-quarter net profit from a year earlier, as the company struggled to reverse flagging sales amid a major corporate overhaul.

The poor results from Acer, the once-highflying symbol of Taiwan's technology prowess, underscore how hard the island has been hit by a collapse in global technology spending. And in an ominous sign for an economy already reeling from record unemployment, at least one analyst said the company could be forced to cut more jobs to reverse its fortunes.

Acer executives blamed the earnings shortfall on the world-wide slowdown in personal-computer sales, but analysts said the company's results were worse than expected and compared poorly with those of other computer makers. Global PC sales contracted by roughly 2% in the second quarter from the previous year, according to market-research companies, the first time that computer sales have shrunk since 1986.

Well, I don't relish living next door to McMannis, what with that large unsightly junk pile of DDR components in his front yard. It going to be a really big mess when the next hurricane blows through Tampa. LOL
