Mq, I stopped reading after a few sentences, because I don't have time to read it, much less respond to it. My understanding is that you are retired, but I am not. I have a real job, plus am in graduate school, classes just started up again yesterday and have a ton of homework already, I've got kids who are starting school next week, and I do have something of a life. This is the last week of summer, and I have to paint and organize the kids' rooms. Like I told you yesterday, if you wanted to impress me, you already had your chance.

I said what I had to say on the other thread. That's my story, and I am sticking to it, and I am done with it.

I regret allowing you to goad me into losing my temper. I thought it was a serious breach of netiquette to come running over here for backup, and a breach of the code of intellectual honor. It's a form of weakness I would never allow myself. I fight standing on my own two feet, and I remain standing or I fall, but I don't run crying for help.

It's been interesting learning that for you, investing is not about making money. I don't have the luxury of losing money philanthropically on companies that I admire, so your recommendations shall evermore be disregarded.

Maurice,

That's because "how gravity works" is something nobody has a clue about.
...
I should really write "what gravity does", which 'is' different from "how gravity works" and 'is' intelligible by watching the effects of gravity on things, such as satellites and apples.

So true - I emerged from a physics degree (well, Natural Sciences to be exact) knowing that I did not even begin to understand how gravity works, although I knew a great deal about what it does.

The serious bits of what you have written are correct, and the funny bits are superb!

John

Mq, I didn't stop reading after a few sentences, because I did have time to read it, and even more to respond to it. My understanding is that you are retired, as am I. I don't have a real job, nor am I in graduate school, so no classes starting up again yesterday and therefore no ounces, pounds or even a ton of homework for me, I've not got kids who are starting school next week, and I do have something of a life -- which is why I am writing you here to say Thank You for making my day start with Uproarious Laugher. This is the last week of summer, and I don't have to paint (and then, having something of a life Watch It Dry) nor organize the kids' rooms. Your posting was just Really Divine. Like I told you before, if you wanted to impress me, you already have. It's been interesting learning from you and so your recommendations shall evermore be highly regarded.

Philanthropically yours,
Apart from GG

Rats, Maurice! If your rant did not involve the impossible task of educating a metaphysically certain lawyer, it would be a Cool Post.

I'm a lawyer, too, and frequently deal with Those Who Are Often Wrong But Never In Doubt ("TWAOWBNID"), i.e., lawyers who ignore the fact that our profession requires us to make poor arguments on occasion. The TWAOBNID fails to make the distinction between his or her professional duty and the weakness of the argument. The TWAOWBNID is convinced that his mere articulation of an argument validates it. Juries and appellate courts correct TWAOWBNIDs all the time, a gruesomely painful experience to witness.

Great post, Mq. I was pleased to note that you avoided pejorative terms such as liar, moron, and pathetic loser.

Have you considered publishing a collection of your rants? There is a certain Mark Twainish ring to them that the public might enjoy.

Maurice - I have not yet "waded" through your long post. But, based on some of the replies to it -- clearly it is a "must read" post ...

It's too bad there is not some compression technology for your writing ...

Jon.

Maurice...

ROFLMAO! Thanks for the post.

FWIW, I can assure you that you needn't have the tiniest bit of regret about your post to CB [ie. "jeez, maybe a was a bit rough"]. Your exchange has been repeated many times that I've seen [in not so dramatic fashion] with nary an admission that someone else may actually be correct. BTW don't believe a word of the reply... the entire post was read, and no one I've ever met on SI spends more time hanging out.
