I don't think it is gains they want to offset, it is LT losses. Remember, any losses in excess of gains are limited to $3,000 for individuals, the rest must be carried forward. If they offset their losses with recognized gains then there is no tax impact to pass on to the fund holders. Of course they may have to wait a period of time before reestablishing the position. It gets very complicated. I don't know much, but I had a conversation with my CPA last week regarding the losses I have incurred this year. I am sure the rest of you don't have this problem<ggg>.

Best to all,

JRH

Pending October wash out - JQP I too am very skeptical of a market movement occurring just as everyone expects.

Two things I am certain of is the market is unpredictable in the short run and at least one subsector will suffer serious selling; the NG E&P pure plays.

I would not bet the farm that the price of crude oil will drop.

Redemptions.

Redemptions from the recently laid off, redemptions to pay quarterly tax bills, to pay down credit card debt.

And especially redemptions cause by a MEDIA LED FEAR FESTIVAL.. Brought to you by the same folks who where cheerleaders during the manic parts of the boom Fear sell newspapers, air time, etc. These media folks got part of America to buy near the highs. Now they will get their readers and viewers to sell near the lows. Just doing their job.
