Democrats are ironically more fiscally conservative these days than "small government" Republicans. Why? Because when GW and Reagan got into office the first thing they did was remove the revenues necessary to pay for their many programs including massive increases in defense spending including absurd boondoggles like Star Wars. They are also for much bigger corporate welfare including GW's proposed 33 billion tax breaks for Big Energy to go in and plunder our environment. In other words, we pay for the corporations who can well afford to pay for themselves. And of course there's the energy gouging and the S+L debacle, both carried out by cronies after irresponsible deregulation and complicity to manipulate world energy markets. It's why we have laws in this country, to keep the pigs form the public troughs. Also whe you remove basic social programs like the GOP wants to do, it costs us all much more in the long run. Example: preventive medicine (cheap) vs. poor person staggering into emergency room dying because he didn't get preventive medicine. So we tax-payers pay ten times as much instead of HMO's who give G-C all the soft money to minimize public health rights. Or Superfund clean-ups because toxic waste regulations were not in place or ignored like B-C are trying to push. etc. etc. And most of all, campaign finance reform, without which our political system will only grow more and more corrupt as Bush-Cheney are glaring examples of. The soft money kings. 100 million in energy soft money = 100 billion in energy gouging. Think about it. It stinks. And costs you too. Big-time.

I am at this point in time arguing that Democrats are more fiscally responsible than Republicans. Through the years the Republican Party was more fiscally conservative and the democrats more liberal in spending policies. The Reagan Adminstration changed all that as the record shows and introduced republicans into spend and promise and then change the rules. Exactly like GWB Jr. is doin now. Bush Sr. corrected some of the Reagan abuses, and the Clinton team was the most fiscally responsible of the last four admins, two free spending republican admins (Reagan and Jr.), one somewhat responsible admin (Bush Sr), one responsible admin (Clinton). Two large states run by Republican Governors Virginia(Gilmore) and Texas (Bush)are going into red big time because of their fiscal irresponsibility. Cut taxes and raise spending and promise to balance the books (HOGWASH). So for now the conservative party is the liberal free spending party and the worst part they are spending it on pork and the rich and corporate fat cats while the average american is getting taken to the cleaners.
