Andreas,

re: For instance a Palomino-Athlon that runs at 1.4 GHz will be MODEL 1600, because AMD considers Palomino 1.4 GHz to be at least as fast as a Pentium 4 1.6 GHz. The printing on the chip will be 'A1600 .....', even though its a 1400 MHz part only.

This scheme will create a very confused, and probably distrustful, consumer. They are taking a standard industry benchmark, and adjusting it to what "AMD considers" to be meaningful.

I can think many, many ways that this can backfire, and really hurt AMD's brand.

Re: . Future Athlons will be specified by 'MODEL' numbers. For instance a Palomino-Athlon that runs at 1.4 GHz will be MODEL 1600, because AMD considers Palomino 1.4 GHz to be at least as fast as a Pentium 4 1.6 GHz. The printing on the chip will be 'A1600 .....', even though its a 1400 MHz part only. The same is valid for motherboards and their POST. A new BIOS Writer's Guide prohibits the BIOS from ever displaying the true core frequency of Palomino!

The informed shopper will know the relative IPC and its value, the uninformed shoppper will no longer be misled by Intel's high-revving / goes-nowhere processor.

Great Job AMD!!!!!!!

Andreas, I thought the OS queries the BIOS to get the speed. I don't see how the OS can calculate the speed of the CPU since it does not have direct access to the hardware. It has to go through the BIOS. So AMD can tell the BIOS guys to report that speed to the OS.
