I would much rather the presentation be Athlon A1600, 1400 Mhz /1600 EMhz* with a note describing equivalent speed compared to P4 performance, or something like that. This way they know the traditional clock speed, as well as the effective/comparative performance level. Any way they do it, it will be a source of confusion.

<Dreaming>Maybe AMD will announce the release of Hammer at the Wit Soundview conference today, and the Mhz sells argument will again be moot.</Dreaming>

Oh no! They're not really lying! They're just trying to tell the consumer the "truth," that Athlon runs just as well as a Pentium 4 clocked a little higher! Surely the consumer will understand, right?

This is another sign that AMD's marketing department hasn't a clue. Even a PR rating would work better than "model numbers."

Re: Consumer buys an A1600. Tells friend, friend laughs and says "that only runs at 1400, you fell for the AMD BS".
- Consumer is looking at PC's asks clerk about A1600. Clerk says "well it only runs at 1400, but AMD says it's as good as a 1600". Consumer frowns, confused. Asks if Intel chips run at advertised speeds.
- Consumer reads AMD ad that say MHz doesn't matter. Thinks "these guys can't keep up with Intel so they are making stuff up".

In your dreams - and you know it.

Intel's been peddling the total fraud P4 for 8 months, AMD will only be giving the consumer additional, very accurate, information.

But, as we both know, 90% of buyers will barely manage to keep track of one number - everything else is fine print detail they can't be bothered with.
