India's 'hidden apartheid' By Eric S. Margolis
Caste and racism are abhorrent aberrations afflicting all countries and societies. Nobody and no nation can claim moral superiority on these matters. In India most people belonging to minority religions claim their caste background and are very proud of it when their caste is high on a Hindu scale of caste divisions. A brahmin-christian would not marry and would discriminate against a dalit-christian. Here the change of religion hasn't made any difference in their attitude which is pervasive in all minority religions in India.

It is not an exaggeration to say that the Indians have perfected caste, color and gender discrimination to the extent that the white supremacists can learn a thing or two from the Indians. Consider this example. Even in the bad old days in the west the whites let the blacks work inside the house or mansion of a slave owner, but the brahmins and other higher caste people of India would not let a dalit and other lower castes inside the house for his very presence or walking in his very shadow is polluting. Apart from caste differences, there are also intra-caste sect affiliations and claims of superiority among Brahmins and other castes. A learned Brahmin calls his religiously illiterate compatriot as a brahmana-bandu, an associate and unequal status.

In the cities there is a progressive breakdown of this evil practice, but in the villages the changes are slow to come. The Govts at the federal and state level have done quite a bit in uplifting the lower castes in education, job placement etc. In my own instance I was not eligible for financial assistance while rich Muslims, Christians and others were given assistance just on the score of their religions. I remember one free loader belonging to the eligible list riding a motor bike to the college. There were many abuses like this during my college days. Many deserving higher caste students were deprived of financial aid. Still the visibility of black advancement in US after 1964 civil rights act is more telling in all walks of life than it is in India following the legislative elimination of caste discrimination in the 1950s.

Islam with all its positive points has not eliminated the problem among various sects like Sunnis, Shias, Ahamadias, Mohajirs, Kurds, Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashtun (Pathan) and Baloch.

No nation or religion can claim moral superiority on this matter.
