Art,

Thanks.. I notice by your profile that you're a fundamentalist? :) I sure as heck would enjoy any comments you have to make about the flash industry and in particular SSTI..

<<Whether a company manufactures its own products using proprietary technology or licenses the technology to others, its profit margins will generally be much higher than those for companies making commodity products. SNDK is, it appears, now mainly a commodity producer, with possibly a few patents that may improve certain characteristics of its products, but which aren't necessarily essential and therefore don't prevent another company from producing something similar without infringing the patent.>>

I had a nice friend over on the Yahoo SSTI that was a patent lawyer a few months ago. He taught a lot of the basics, but still have a lot of gaping holes in my knowledge.. I've been curious to know and understand whether application for a patent implies protection from the date of the application, or the date assigned. I've also wondered what takes some patents longer to clear than others. I'm assuming the complexity has something to do with it.

Seems like from a big-picture perspective, that in technology.. a 2-3 year wait for a patent grant might potentially leave a company with an outdated method by the time it's actually granted. Perhaps Mr. Zeev Hed might have some insight, if you're out there? :)

All the best, docpaul
