John,

I just wanted to say I thought that was a really excellent post that cut to the core of AMD's confused marketing ideas. It seems to me more and more likely, as 5dave22 suggested, that this is a marketing idea being driven by engineers, not anyone familiar with advertising concepts. It's like having physicians design a marketing campaign for an over-the-counter headache medicine - it becomes overly technical and difficult for the layman to understand, and you lose their interest quickly. Rather than talking about vaso-constriction reduction in 57% of the patients in phase 3 clinical trials vs. a placebo in a double-blind study, you tell the audience they'll feel better, right? It's pitiful how badly AMD misses the idea of what's effective in this too-late campaign.

Hi John, this is an excellent post. The largest problem I see with "Athlon runs X% over PIV" is that is a constantly evolving number.

The bottom line is NOW AMD is in damage control mode. And we know how poor Jerry is when confronted, this will probably show through in their advertising. They can succeed, but they need a much better and stronger ad agency to do it. They are weak (both AMD and agency) and there is NO reason to think that will change NOW.

Much of this could have been avoided, or at least their chances of sounding like a reputable company would be better had they built a name when Athlon was FIRST introduced.

Ah well, with the market the way it is now, does it really matter for investors?

Best Regards,

Dave
