kidl,

The so called "big guys on the block" have been borrowing their own clients stock to build large short positions in anticipation of a continued down turn in the markets fueled by an increasing rate of layoffs and the drop in retail spending accompanied by a loss of confidence, mortgage foreclosures, personal bankruptcies, and portfolio and mutual fund holding liquidations by many retail investors. I don't see any compelling reasons to buy stocks at this point in time. Its been well over a decade since the Japanese real estate bubble and the Nikei has just made new lows not seen since 1985. The tech bubble was much larger and could take a number of years for a recovery, especially when you consider that the market capitalization exceeded the GDP of the USA by a considerable amount!!!! I can't help but wonder if we are in the first year of a multi-year bear market? On the bright side, there are however, select opportunities, even in a bear market.

cheers,
teevee
