Hey Dave,

Now you know I disagree. I've owned both a GTW computer and a DELL and an off the shelf store thing. I can think of several huge, huge to this consumer, differences. Granted such items may not matter to others, but granted it just may given the success of DELL's business.

I especially disagree with "manufacture and sell virtually indistinguishable products in a stagnant commodity market with a piffling barrier to entry." GTW and DELL are indistinguishable for the most part. But there are huge barriers to entry in a size and cost structure manner.

GTW is losing the marketing war in a big way. It may be a function of just their marketing. It may be a function of their cost structure and where they are cutting corners. My GTW machine breaks everytime I sneeze it seems. The DELL doesn't.

Sure I can get a machine built by the kid doewn the street cheap, or off the shelf at Retail Land. But it won't be exactly configured how I want it, with the software I need, with the software I want. It will just be the basic machine and the basic operatng system junk. For this I will save $200.

Or I can order up from DELL, pay around $200 more, and get the software I need to operate my business already installed. Basically the Microsoft Business suite, with Excel, Access, Powerpoint, etc.

Last I checked the cost of that was significantly above $200. So we come back to the barriers to entry. Obviously DELL has found some efficiencies of scale that allow it to be profitable and offer a sufficiently better deal to the consumer that all its rivals.
