patty, I find the story amusing as I find your one sided cut and paste of the story. As a technology ignorant individual you have little to no appreciation of the technology that keeps you safe every day. Waste is and can be a hazard.

But from the story.
Letters of recommendation to make the site a landmark came from the American Public Works Association, the American Society of Civil Engineers and Autry.

In approving the dump's designation, the Interior
Department called the Fresno dump the "oldest 'true'
sanitary landfill in the United States. At the Fresno site,
the layering of refuse and dirt in trenches ... and the covering of the filled areas daily to minimize rodent and debris problems represented a technique adopted by the builders of modern sanitary landfills."

"The real story of 2002 is that 115 acres are going from trash to treasure," Autry said. "There will be a regional sports complex on top of the dump that will have nine soccer fields, six softball fields, a tot area and green space. The EPA has signed off on it as 100% safe."

A choice made and one can smile and argue about choice.

Amusing story, also amusing is that at some point in the future 20th century landfills might well become archeological digs.
