That's a silly statement. :)

Many people tried many times to make a heavier-than-air vehicle that could fly. They went through many variations, all of which failed, before they went out again and finally succeeded.

Still, I do think that there are better approaches than performance rating. I kinda like using a more instruction-oriented objective number (like, for example, peak MIPS), and I liked most of all the idea of having a high core clock but just dividing everything.
