John, Re: Now explain that to a guy who is watching TV, eating a pizza, drinking a beer [...]

Since you have a lot of experience in marketing and PR: What would you do if you were in Jerry's position? I can't think of a marketing strategy that wouldn't have major problems:

- model rating scheme: lying to the customer and confusing him
- MHz doesn't matter: customer isn't interested, it's the only metric he has learned to know
- our chips are better: difficult to get customer's attention and competing against one of the best established brands worldwide
- doing nothing: further ASP eroding and customer thinks AMD chips are inferior low budget chips

So what should AMD do? I'd favor the third option since it's the most honest one but it's extremely difficult with a limited marketing budget to compete against someone like Intel.

> Now explain that to a guy who is watching TV

Why? He doesn't need specifics said to him. All he needs to know is that "the Athlon XP 4400 is your choice for the new millennium!" or some other random marketing phrase. Our couch potato doesn't really care about the numbers. He just wants the "ultimate" computing experience. And the most popular means of pushing an "ultimate" product in the realm of marketing is simple obfuscation. Like "enhances your internet experience".

A good term that applies here is "KISS", or "Keep It Simple, Stupid"
