FWIW to anyone that might encounter the same problem. My first attempt with IE 6.

I downloaded IE6 earlier today and decided to give it a shot tonight. Installation appeared to be going fine until the usual restart windows to complete installation did not appear. It just rebooted on it's own. Updating System Settings window took an awful long time to finish but I still wasn't real worried. I figured it had a lot of new settings to set up.

Finally booted back up to windows and I noticed my desktop icons did not appear normal. The blue explorer "e" was a pale blue and my Outlook Express icon was faded as well. I use a batch file to clean up junk about once a week that forces windows to rebuild all your icons so I ran it...no effect.

I opened an IE window and started looking around and noticed that I no longer had the small vertical bars on my toolbars (the ones that let you resize what's on each one) nor could I get a double-headed arrow so I could resize the toolbar itself. I surfed a couple of minutes and with more than one window open there started to be some hesitation opening a new window and some "ghosting" ( the new window was semi-transparent til fully loaded) while it tried to load.

Ok...I say to myself...things are not going as planned. What now? I decided to reinstall this sucker and that should probably correct whatever went wrong with the first install. I'm going to outfox this machine and download a fresh copy just in case I got an incomplete download the first time. No problem.

Downloaded 6 and began installation. It recommended that I not continue because all the components were already installed. I ignored that warning and proceeded. Watching the installation I noticed the first thing it was doing was backing up my current configuration...do I want to do that...oh shit..will this make it impossible to revert to 5.0 if it now has 6.0 as a backup? Hmmmm...I better get out of this before I really screw up. I stopped the install and got the message that several components were already installed and asked if I really wanted to exit the install.
Ok...I'm outahere...I'll check to see if the repair tool is available on 6.0. Yes...it's there...this will fix me right up. Not exactly. Ran the repair tool, rebooted, nothing changed..still crappy looking icons and no toolbar controls.

Control Panel...Add/Remove Programs/ Internet Explorer 6/ add/remove button/ restore previous configuration (fingers crossed)

Success. IE 5.01SP2 back home where it belongs. Anybody have any ideas what went wrong?

tc :-)
